Blast From The Past: An Old-fashioned Design

Old houses are said to have a rich history

Old houses are said to have a rich history. Ancestral homes, plantation properties and family mansions for instance, have stood the test of time. And with it comes their story and their classic beauty. These houses have a certain elegance that looks amazing even at this modern time.

Patterned wallpapers give you a good starting point for decorating in the heirloom style. A lot of old homes, from the Victorian era all the way to the 1940's, had wallpaper, so it's a very faithful period detail to add. Like with paint, you could choose to work with just one accent wall if you don't want to do the whole room right away. Designs like solid stripes or a damask pattern should work really well with the heirloom theme.

Rugs are more important for the heirloom style than they are for most others. A single Oriental rug at the center of the room can make or break the whole antiquated look that you're trying to get. It's your chance to inject a bit of color and luxury to a room that should otherwise be kept drab and understated. Just avoid small or modern design rugs in an heirloom-themed space, and you should do fine.

Another essential for an heirloom style is an area rug. Position a rug in the middle of the room but ensure that it has a commanding size and eye-catching design. The color is understated so no need to scout for bold colors and patterns.

High-backed chairs capture the grandeur that people were so proud of in the old world style. Upholstered sofas are fine as long as you keep them understated and you don't get so many of them that the high-backed chairs are drowned out. And for the ultimate old world statement, consider getting a wingback chair or two to create a focal point.

What better way to dramatize a room than by hanging a chandelier? Chandeliers can be expensive for a tight budget and big for a rather limited space, so you can just use one in the largest space in the house. Ideal places are in the living room, foyer and dining room.

Going back in time in decorating your homes gives you an edge. It is different. The popularity of contemporary themes will certainly make an old-fashioned or traditional design a standout. Just don't forget to make your home as warm and inviting as possible despite the grand furnishings and classic style.
