Blogging Tips For London 2012
Along with inbound flights, London is set to become a major talking point on the world wide web
, as bloggers from around the world prepare to cast their thoughts on the city's hosting of the 2012 Olympics. As always, articles from small bloggers which strike a chord with those watching will spread like wildfire, so there's a window of opportunity waiting for the right future journalist. The smart move would be to prepare as best you can for that moment. Here are a few tips.
Be creative
If you are starting a blog, you'll be looking at things to cover. What will really increase your readers is your blog being unique. For example, the BBC will be keeping people up to date with action from the events, so you might not want to just report on the events. Maybe you could offer an opinion piece after it? Better still, fire up Twitter and try and talk to athletes for a preview. At the end of the day, it's what you feel most comfortable with writing about, but do look at what you're competing with to give yourself a chance.
Design
Although your words will be doing most of the work, a good design can reel readers in. Look at colour schemes, look at the placement of various boxes on the page and choose your images wisely. If you want to add a professional touch, sign up with a stock photo provider, as you don't have to worry about going through edit suites to make sure the pixels are small enough; nor do you have to ask for a second opinion as to whether the image is stretched. With a set of

Spellcheck
It might sound obvious, but a typo or an American spelling served to UK readers won't go down well; they're probably more likely to be still thinking about it three paragraphs later. Now, after putting everything into that last sentence, you'll probably feel a little exhausted. Checking your work thoroughly- word for word might seem a little laborious, but it's a necessity. You probably think as the structure looks good with a quick scan, there can't be any mistakes - but they're often hidden away. So, take a ten-minute break - knowing that you've done the hard bit - before going back and analysing every sentence. You'll be amazed at what you've missed.
Enjoy
Lastly, enjoy what you're doing. Journalism was made for sporting events like these so embrace it. Writing about the games should in no way feel like a bit of extra work or strain. So, find your angle, tweak your page design, make sure everything is clean in your delivery and bring the events to life with your words.
