The Life We Choose episode from season two of Blue Bloods deal with varied inner emotions dealt by Frank and Reagan

. The episode is directed by Felix Alcala. In this episode a detective is shot and another detective who has a close association with Frank Reagan is shot dead during an undercover drug operation. With grief painted all over Danny and Jackie are determined to catch the killers and bring them in front of justice.

The episode opens up with Danny, Jackie and few other detectives are on the track of a drug dealer. Despite the case being a big one in the career, Danny and the other detectives ease themselves by chatting about other issues such as baptism of Dannys child and how his wife Linda feels about being a godmother. Jackie and Danny board the police the car while the other two detectives take a van. Among the two detectives, detective Gates is a good friend of Danny.

The van is equipped with tools and wires to nab the drug dealers. En route, Dannys car loses track of the van due to sudden intervention by a truck. Danny and Jackie find their way back to the van but by then it is too late. Detective Gates is shot dead and the other detective has sustained massive injuries.

Commissioner Reagan obtains all possible informations from the injured detective before the latter is operated. Frank Reagan informs Danny through phone to bring down the killer by any means. Danny begins his relentless pursuit for the killer.

From the surveillance video the shooter is identified as Phantom. Along with the phantom, a drug dealer is found present during the shooting. Unable to track down the dealer, Danny brings in the dealers mother who fearing for her sons life refuses to disclose his hideout. But even this time, the phantom takes the upper hand. The police find the dealer dead in his hideout. The dealers grief stricken mother reveals few names including the name Ray Bell, a former drug dealer. The revelation of Rays name made things clear for Danny. They realized that the phantom is killing his former and current associates. The last one on the list is Ray Bell.

Danny tracks Ray and begins his investigation. Shortly, Ray receives a text message from his elder son Derek. In the message, Derek has mentioned about a man with a gun in their apartment and that he waiting for Ray to come. Realizing that the man is phantom, Danny decides to rescue Rays family from the phantom and bring him down once and for all. With Dereks help who apparently is hiding in his bedroom, Danny enter the apartment through the fire escape window. In the following conflict, Danny shoots the phantom out of the window, landing on a cop car. Though it is a fitting end to a cold blood killer, lives once lost are lost forever. On the whole this episode is emotional and a commendable effort from the director.
