Bmw 3 Series With In-car Satellite Navigation
BMW has announced that it will improve its in-car satnav with a traffic information system that it claims is the most advanced yet seen
. This new top of the range sat-nav enables people to not have to carry their portable device around with them all day and risk either loosing it or getting their cars broken into in order for someone to steal their sat-nav by accidently leaving it attached to the windscreen.
BMW's Real Time Traffic Information, or RTTI, is now available on all new vehicles equipped with a BMW Professional navigation system with no extra charge, and offers near-real-time traffic information in a similar way to TomTom's Live functionality.
Rather than using the traditional radio-based Traffic Message Channel system, BMW's RTTI uses the Transport Protocol Expert Group channel over the GSM mobile network, resulting in a system that updates every three minutes with an accuracy of around 500m.
The information received by the RTTI module links in to the BMW Professional Navigation map in a simple colour-coding system to alert drivers to the flow of traffic. This information is also taken into account when calculating routes, to ensure that the driver is directed along the quickest possible path.
BMW's initial RTTI roll-out covers all major road networks and motorways in the UK, along with selected road networks across Europe for journeys abroad. The company is also making the system available on any internet-connected device via the BMW Routes web portal, allowing drivers to take advantage of RTTI information when planning journeys away from their vehicle.
The new system will be available on the new BMW 3 Series, the sixth-generation. The new model will retain its trademark rear wheel drive and 50:50 weight distribution, with a longer and wider chassis than the current model.
Step inside the luxurious saloon and you will see that the new 3 Series gets more head and leg room, while the height of the rear door and its opening angle have both been increased to ease entry. Boot space has been increased by 20 litres to 480 litres.
The new
BMW 3 Series will go on sale in the UK on 11th February 2012, after its unveiling at the Detroit motor show in January 2012.
