BMW 320 Diesel Engines: Getting Faster With Each Generation

The most successful series in BMWs lineup, launched its sixth generation as of 2011. Among all the petrol and diesel powered variants, the most recent BMW 320D holds a unique place. There is something about its engine that exalts its status over other BMW diesel engines. Though this 2.0 litre straight-four engine is neither the biggest nor the most economical one produced by BMW, yet it has made BMW320D one of the most sought after compact executive cars in market. Even within 3 Series, sale figures of 320D remain impressive.

From 2005 till 2011, BMW has launched multiple diesel engines with varying capacities and horse power; though their performance varied widely, diesel engines were launched only in 2.0 and 3.0 litre capacities. However, these engines were used in models ranging from 316D to 335D, where 316D still comes equipped wit 2.0 litre, straight-four diesel engine and 335D supports a 3.0 litre straight-six diesel engine.

Some startling facts regarding BMWs 3 Series, diesel powered lineup are as follows:

316D: It could reach 60 miles from stand still in 10.9 seconds, despite the fact that its engine produced only 114 bhp. BMW used this nimbler 2.0 litre, straight-four diesel engine from 2009 onwards in 316Ds.

318D: Powered by similar 2.0 litre diesel engine, 318D could accelerate to 60 miles in 10.6 seconds, thanks to 120 bhp and 280 N-m of torque its straight-four produced. A more recent version (2007 onwards) of 2.0 litre diesel engine used in 318D produced 141 bhp and could take 318D from 0 to 60 miles in 9.3 seconds.

320D: 2.0 litre diesel used from 2005 till 2007 produced 161 bhp and allowed 320D to reach 0 to 60 miles in 8.3 seconds. Its updated version (2007 to 2010) produced 175 bhp and reached 60 miles under 8 seconds. The most recent (2010 onwards) version of 2.0 litre diesel engine develops 181 bhp and reaches 60 miles in 7.5 seconds.

325D: It is powered by 3.0 litre, straight-six diesel engine, capable of producing 194 bhp. This increased power allowed 325D to reach 0 to 60 miles under 7.5 seconds. It was first used from 2006 till 2010, BMW modernized this 3.0 litre engine in 2010. Improvements made by BMW allowed 325D to reach same speed in 7 seconds.

330D: BMW uses most powerful diesel engines in this series. The most powerful 330Ds engine produced 282 bhp and reached 60 miles from stand still in 60 seconds.
