Bmx Set To Be The Coolest Xmas Gift In 2011

It's that time of year again when kids start thinking about what they want for Christmas

. Whether they still believe in Father Christmas or not, you can be sure children around the country are making a list, checking it twice, and changing their behaviour from naughty to nice, just in case Santa does come to town.

No doubt games consoles, iPods, smartphones, TVs, laptops and tablet computers will be top of many children's list, but there's one present predicted to be a hit this year that's not so high-tech - the BMX bike.

Now, you'd be forgiven for thinking BMXing is a throwback to the 80s, but it has been enjoying something of a renaissance lately. A lot of this is down to the huge popularity of Youtube videos featuring riders showing off their 'sick' BMX skills and demonstrating how to do cool tricks and stunts online, not to mention the ever-amusing BMX 'fails' when a trick goes slightly wrong.

Social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook have also helped to connect a whole new generation of BMXers worldwide, allowing them to share tips, videos, and comments using their very own BMX slang.

A few years ago it was mountain biking that was the big thing, but kids are now looking for bikes with more edgy designs and an alternative feel, making BMXs the natural choice. Brands such as VooDoo, Pilgrim, Diamondback and Radio are tapping into this by designing some great-looking bikes that'll give kids the necessary street cred.

BMX sales have grown faster than any other type of cycling this year, with the vast majority being bought for 6-15 year olds. Accessories such as stunt pegs, handlebars, valve caps and pedals are also flying off the shelves as youngsters look to customise their bike to make it unique to them, with designs such as skulls and dice proving popular.

Helmets and gloves are another must-have accessory for wannabe BMX pros. Even if they're not going to be attempting any gravity-defying stunts, kids like to copy the look of their pro rider idols, which can only be a good thing if it encourages them to wear a helmet. They should wear one at all times, even if they're just going to be cruising around your local area.

The exciting, fast paced sport of BMX racing has now become an Olympic event, and with London 2012 just around the corner, it's even more likely kids will be asking their parents for a BMX bike in the not-too-distant future. Why not beat them to it and get them one for Christmas?
