A good body fat percentage for women will vary due to water retention, bone mass, muscle mass, activity level, weight and height. To ensure your body fat is not too high, exercise and eating right are excellent habits to maintain.

The essential body fat for a women is between 10 -13% and is higher than that of a man because of hormonal changes and child bearing. Essential fat is necessary and we should not try to change it. The realization that it is necessary and does not take from beauty in any way allows us to work around it and eliminate any excess fat from the body overall.

A women that trains twice a day, has a physical job, does vigorous exercise or otherwise has a very active lifestyle can easily maintain a percentage of 14 - 20%. This would be a great body fat percentage for women that are highly active but extremely hard to achieve and maintain for a women that is not active. With a good fitness level this number can increase to 21- 24%. A women that chooses little or no exercise and enjoys a sedentary lifestyle, the number may rise again to 25- 31%.


A body fat percentage for women at 31% is not considered obese, but it is not a good body fat percentage for women, none the less. To be classified as obese is to have a body fat percentage of 32 or greater. Not much of a difference but a very important indication that healthy fat loss should be taken into consideration.
