If you have a passion about something, you are often willing to spend exorbitant amounts indulging in your hobby. And for Mercedes Brewer, a classic car enthusiast from Leicestershire, this is expensive to say the least. She has recently been awarded ninety four thousand pounds in damages, after buying a vintage Bentley for over four hundred thousand pounds, and finding ti to be a fake.

She purchased the Bentley in June 2007, thinking it was one of only one hundred and seventy seven Speed Six models that were produced in the nineteen thirties, considering that she had bagged a rare limited edition to add to her collection. Her husband encouraged it, as he used to be a car dealer in the sixties and seventies, and owns several Bentleys himself.

Once Mrs Brewer had purchased the car she asked a friend of hers who worked for Bonhams, the auctioneers, to value the car for her to see what she would get at a specialist auction, and was surprised to hear that the only original part of the engine was a small part of the chassis, the rest had all been replaced, leaving the value of the car around three hundred thousand pounds, a lot cheaper that she had originally thought, and what she had paid for.

She has been quoted as saying When you buy a car from someone who regards themselves as the world's leading vintage Bentley specialist you don't suspect anything untoward.'
