This image may be familiar to many, but what it actually means may not be. This is a scale of how efficient a boiler is called the SEDBUK scale (which stands for Seasonal Efficiency of a Domestic Boiler in the UK').

This is a an important measurement to consider when dealing with boilers and considering whether to get a new one, as the more efficient a boiler is, the more money it will save the owner in heating costs and the less impact it will have on the environment.

Gas boilers work by burning gas to produce heat. This action naturally creates excess gases most notably CO2. As well as harming the environment, these surplus' gases also release heat from your home when they are ejected heat which could be better used keeping your house warm!

So when you are next looking for a new boiler, keep the SEDBUK scale in mind to make sure you get a cost-effective, environmentally friendly and efficient boiler.

How is boiler efficiency rated by SEDBUK?

The British government's energy efficiency committee developed the SEDBUK scale as an effort to raise awareness of the problems associated with maintaining an inefficient boiler. The SEDBUK scale is a simple system that rates a boilers efficiency in terms of how much fuel the convert to heat. There are several different factors taken into account for this equation, including:

The UK climate

Boiler type

Common usage (domestic)

Type of fuel used

Method of ignition

Internal store size

Once these factors are rated, the boiler is then given a SEDBUK score that rank in descending order from A to G with A stating the boiler is over 90% efficient and is permitted to carry the official energy saving logo. This means an 'A grade' boiler would both save the owner the most money in heating bills as well as reduce the impact on the environment

As well as being an important factor for consumers choosing a new boiler, SEDBUK ratings are also important for anyone involved in fitting gas boilers.
