Bols: What Are They?

When you're using a trucking service to move your goods

, there are certain types of paperwork that are supposed to be with every shipment that you send with that trucking company. The BOL is certainly among the most basic of these. However, just because it is basic, it does not mean that it is unimportant. In fact, it is safe to say that the bill of lading is actually among the absolutely most important documents that your trucking company will prepare with each of your shipments.

BOL does stand for bill of lading, and this is the piece of paper which really contains most of the important information about your shipment. The idea is that anyone should be able to pick up a bill of lading and figure out exactly what is going on. They should know what is being delivered, from where, and to where, as well as how much was paid for that shipping. They should also be able to see when the package was picked up, and when it is supposed to be delivered.

Anyone that has worked in shipping or receiving is going to be used to dealing with BOLs on an ongoing basis. These documents need to go out with every shipment because this is what people in these professions use to make sure that the right goods are being moved in the right way. Without them, everything can quickly get confused.

The BOL becomes even more important when you're shipping across an international border. When it comes to international shipping, paperwork becomes much more critical than when you're just shipping to another state. There are a few documents which are going to be required every time you ship to another country. The BOL is among the most important of these, and any package that goes through international customers, between any two countries is going to need a BOL.

If the BOL does not match what appears to be present in the shipment, or if the document is missing altogether, then you can have a very large problem when you're trying to ship internationally. The customs agents can actually hold your package and decide to not let it into their country if they do not have the required information in front of them. This is why sometimes double checking to make sure that your courier has a proper BOL going out with each of your international shipments is a prudent thing to do.
