Booking Your Rental Car On The Web
Most people are concerned with credit card fraud
, that is they worry that their details will be 'stolen' but what most people fail to realize is that you're at just as much at risk of this when you hand your credit card over to a waiter in a restaurant! Or, in fact anywhere that you hand your card over to pay for something where the card is taken out of your sight.
Just check that any credit card details you are asked for are being sent through a secure server. How do you know? Usually your computer will warn you when you change between a secure and non-secure server. If not, look in the lower right hand corner of the status bar at the bottom of the browser window. If you're on a secure site there should be an icon of a small padlock.
Booking a rental car really is simple, just find the price that you like and make the booking! You'll find different interfaces when you visit car rental sites. Some forms and processes will be short, others will take a little longer. Don't click away from a site just because you don't like the colors, or think the forms are too long and involved, remember you're looking for a 'deal' right?
Some sites ask for an email, some don't. Some will ask for a different set of personal information. It might be a good idea to check if these sites are secured as well, and if anything makes you uncomfortable just go on to the next prospective car rental company.
Set yourself a target of sites to visit, that is, set yourself to visit say 10 car rental sites, remembering to keep notes of which site gave which price. Research shows that people get 'overloaded' when they try and hit too many sites, with the result that they book on the last site regardless of price because they got 'fatigued' with searching. This could loose you money as you may end up spending more than you need.
Always check one major supplier like Alamo or Europcar (depending on where you're traveling) then check several brokers to see if you can get a better deal. You usually will!
So remember, limit the number of sites you search. Take notes on the ones you do search, the URL, the costs, the services, and any other details that are of concern to you. Check at least one major supplier as a comparison to the rest. And make sure you enter your credit card information only on secure sites.
