Many of us will have an ongoing battle fighting the bulge at several points in our lifetime and many of us will lose that battle

. It is strange that many people have heard that diets do not work yet they continue to embark on them in the hope that maybe this time it will have a different outcome.

It is the same with dieting and once you are off a diet the weight returns and usually with some extra as well. Since many of us learn about dieting and eating from misleading advertising methods we are confused about how to make our weight loss attempts work.

The true key to successful and permanent weight loss is not about restricting food - it is about improving metabolism. This is your body's engine and is responsible for turning the food you eat into energy so it can be burnt up rather than piling it onto your tummy, hips and thighs.


Dieting methods that promise fast and dramatic weight loss reduce calories way too far and adversely alter metabolism so it ends up burning less fuel so even more can be stored making you fatter. You cannot physically lose more than one to two pounds of actual body fat each week. If you have greater reductions in body weight this is often the result of water loss and muscle tissue wasting which is not a good thing.

The only way you can boost your metabolism is to get your muscular system in better condition so you can burn more fuel (calories) both day and night. The way to do this is with a proper program of strength training exercise.

Many people that start an exercise program in the hope of losing weight get fixated on calories and make this the focus of their exercise session. They often do long slow 'cardio' type sessions but this is not the way to build a strong, lean body with a healthy metabolism.

Low intensity activities like walking, jogging or cycling and other recreational activities only burn a small amount of calories and this ceases once you stop the activity. You need to be focused on what happens after the exercise session has finished and the only way to do this is to work your muscles directly and make them stronger.

Your aim to exercise is to improve your strength and fitness with higher intensity exercise that will rapidly and radically change your body at a cellular level. So, stop worrying about just burning calories in the short term and get it happening for the long term so you can burn off excess body fat even while you are sleeping.

Combine your exercise program with a satisfying whole-foods nutrition plan that supports your strength training program as opposed to a low calorie, soul destroying, energy sucking, metabolism dropping deprivation 'diet' and you have the formula for sustaining a healthy slim body for life.
