Botox Boom Among Young Women

A survey carried out bytwoBBC Radio programmes of salons

, and clinics across the UK, shows that those having Botox procedures are getting younger.

One of the main cosmetic centres in the country says a quarter of its clients are now aged under 30, and that number has doubled in three years. These young people, (mainly women) believe that having Botox now, will stop the ageing process kicking-in in the first place. But some doctors are warning they are wasting their money.

A Radio1 listener Abigail, aged 23, started having Botox injections when she was 21. I had a strong frown, but no actual wrinkles across my forehead, she said. But my mum has got a deep frown line; I didn't want mine to get as bad as hers, so I had mine done now.It is just a preventative measure.

Botox is a temporary treatment, it does not prevent wrinkles from forming.

Once you have started using Botox it becomes expensive and addictive. No-one wants to go back to how they looked before they started, and many have got into debt, some seriously, to be able to keep up with their treatments.

Abigail went on to say, "Nobody really looks at you, and thinks you have had something done, it just means you can't frown. You don't look odd or anything like that, you just can't look angry.

A Botox injection will temporarily paralyze the muscles in the area of the face being treated,so a procedure on the forehead will prevent you from frowning, or raising your eyebrows. It is these movements that eventually lead to lines and wrinkles.

At his central London clinic Dr. Nick Lowe said. "I carry out hundreds of Botox procedures a year, but I do not agree with injecting people who are too young". He went on to say, "You have got to have some lines and wrinkles to start with, and for many of the people I see, they come because of peer pressure, when there is absolutely no reason for them to have it". People can be easily persuaded to have a treatment, and they should be advised against it.

Molly 24,another Radio1 listener says, "Botox is just a step up from face cream, and it's down to personal choice whether you have it done or not".I havebeenhaving injections at the side of her eyes for 18 months now,to stop them from creasing whenI smile. I see it as a step up from face cream; people who are against Botox have facials and similar treatments done.

With treatments costing 200 pounds plus, and lasting around 4 months, it can be an expensive if you want to maintain the look. There are real worries about younger women who, being unable to find the money to keep their treatment going, are being forced to look for cheaper, and less regulatedalternatives. Dr. Lowe is concerned that high street salons are offering cut priced deals. He said, "It is not a dangerous treatment providing you go to someone who has been well trained, knows what they are doing, and can give the right advice.Mistakes can result inloss offacial expression, drooping of the eyebrows, and the face can take on a completely frozen look".

If you are considering Botox doctors are strongly advising people tomake absolutely surethat the person giving the injection is amedical professional. In the UK,beauty therapistsare not allowed to injectBotox.

Just a Few Facts.

Botox was first used in 1980 to treat muscle disorders like lazy eye, eye ticks and uncontrolled blinking In small doses, Botox works by paralyzing the muscles of the face which are used in frowning or raising the eyebrows.

In larger doses, Botox can leave the face with a lack of expression.

Some Hollywood stars have injections in their armpits to paralyze the sweat glands.

Side effects include soreness or mild bruising and headaches. There are also far more serious side-effects, soif you are serious about using Botox, see your doctor first, and do your homework.
