Several corporates, when organizing a smaller conference, prefer the intimacy and regularly exclusivity of the smaller Boutique Class of Hotel or Guest House, and generally, the personal attention of the proprietors as numerous are managed by the homeowners of these properties.

I have chosen Durban and surrounds for this report from my first-hand knowledge of these centers which I really suggest.

THE BENJAMIN BOUTIQUE HOTEL Situated in Florida Road, in the heart of Durban's Berea, surrounded by +- 30 up-market, popular restaurants in a tree-lined avenue, this sophisticated Boutique Hotel is one of Durbans historic buildings, transformed into a hotel whilst keeping its olde worlde charm. The Benjamin has persistently supplied best standards, remarkable cuisine and being so central is fairly handy to most corporates within the greater Durban area.

Symposium Centers at The Benjamin incorporate a 32-seater seminar facility and a 10-seater executive Boardroom. Professionally managed by Fiona Koch whose late husband Werner Koch was certainly one of South Africas leading executive chefs for several years. She runs an immaculate center and has retained its home from-home ambience while remaining ever professional and deserves the accolades this wonderful centre receives in several critiques and first hand encounters of guests.

Accommodation comprises of 43 double rooms, beautifully appointed all with satellite and wireless internet. A favored and realistic possibility for the business man or woman requiring accommodation overnight or for the week.

KHAYA LEMBALI Owner managed by Helena Bailey, this gracious Cape Dutch Homestead is situated in the picturesque, up-market suburb of Morningside, Durban. Neighbour to the well known Mitchell Park. While Khaya Lembali is a mere ten minutes drive from the city centre, it really is tranquil and peaceful and its ambience ensures the tranquillity essential for prosperous conferencing.

Well-Known for its Al Fresco Dining on an out of doors pool terrace, sheltered from the elements, seminar delegates will love fantastic cuisine, well established for its professional yet home-style flavours and presentation.

A variety of nicely equipped symposium centres accommodate between 10 and 80 delegates in meeting depending on seating requirements.

SICAS GUEST HOUSE BEREA

Yet another of my favourites, having coordinated many conferences at this high-quality facility and therefore having experienced first-hand, their continually top standards, Sicas Guest House, set in a safe, picturesque property and fairly central to all main freeways and the city, oozes Colonial charm, delivering luxury accommodation rooms, five contemporary, state-of-the-art meeting venues, which double as attractive marriage reception rooms, ensuring that the group will really like high quality cuisine and personal attention from owner/manager Janus Horn and his well trained staff.

In addition to a beautifully planned garden, Sicas Guest House has a magnificent flood-lit tennis court, built to professional standards, available by arrangement to resident guests. The property is large and therefore also a most suitable Team Building venue in the Durban area.

MAKARANGA GARDEN LODGE

Makaranga Garden Lodge is situated on over thirty acres of breath-taking Botanical Gardens in a fairly accessible part of Kloof, in the Western Suburbs of Durban. This is a must to take a walk across the yard and view the attractive plants, trees and flowers, the waterfall and most in particular the Japanese Garden which is what helps make Makaranga uniquely awesome and which attracts return visits from past visitors.

The rooms are spacious and luxurious, individually decorated. They were designed with physically challenged guests in mind and have all the wherewithal for complete convenience and ease of access.

The restaurant "Nonna" offers a delightful, calm ambience and is kiddie friendly.

Symposium Center at Makaranga

There are three state-of-the-art Convention Halls at Makaranga Garden Lodge, one which is substantial enough to divide into 2, giving a possibility of 4 centres. It is the perfect country get-away, while being a mere 20 minute drive from Durbans CBD and 30 mins from Pietermaritzburg.

Plenty of safe parking is accessible, incorporated in the day convention rates and standard congress equipment is provided at no additional cost. Any Audio Visual equipment that might be required is also available at an additional charge.
