My eldest brother is 10 years older than me. When I was still at primary school, he was starting his apprenticeship as a printer and lithographer. It's funny how you remember little things, but I distinctly remember him coming home one day and explaining to my parents that he had fallen for one of the old apprentices practical jokes that prevailed on the factory floor in years gone by. It went like this.

You were told by your foreman to go and see `old Bill` in the spares department and to ask him for the long weight (wait). He would then ask you to wait in the corner until he could deal with you. After about 10 minutes and you were starting to think that you had been ignored. Eventually, you would ask `old Bill` "excuse me, but can I have the long weight?" and he would reply, "You've just had it!".

An old joke I know, but how ling do you think you will have to wait during this winter should your vehicle break down? I don't know about you, but I do not fancy the idea of standing for hours on some motorway in freezing conditions, having been advised not to stay in the vehicle whilst on the hard shoulder on safety grounds!

Perhaps if you do become one of the 25000 or so call outs on a busy day, and that is just the AA, you will have time to ponder the virtues of breakdown cover.

For a lot of us it is an afterthought, having just been a victim of a breakdown.

Bear in mind that just over half of us who drive will experience a breakdown at sometime during our driving lives. Moreover, a staggering one in a hundred of us will have as many as TEN breakdowns!

When I started driving in the 1960s, breakdown cover was for the better of who droves Jags and the like. Not only that, the cost of the cover was not anywhere near as competitive as it is today for a number of reasons. One of them is that there are now a number of organizations whom offer various breakdown policies. It is wise to shop around and do not always just look at the main providers of this type of cover. There are many smaller operators who offer excellent cover at very reasonable prices.

Many insurers offer breakdown cover as part of their policies, but it is wise to compare the covers offered on a like-for-like basis to establish which the best deals are. Do not overlook the first time offers. They often offer a fantastic discount for first time buyers in this market. There are even ways that you can get cheap cover by using loyalty cards points.

It is also wise to have cover that is appropriate for your circumstances. We all need the basic breakdown cover for roadside assistance but consider whether a breakdown at home would represent a major problem for you. I have in the past had cover extended so that it covered me in any other vehicle, rather than the vehicle itself. That was a personal choice and I paid a little extra for it, but it paid dividends the first time I accepted a lift from a mate of mine going to a football match, only to break down on the motorway on the way there.
