Breaking It Down - How To Choose An Assisted Living Facility.

So you are faced with a difficult decision

So you are faced with a difficult decision. What assisted living facility is right for my mom or dad. Just thinking about the whole process makes you uncomfortable but it shouldn't. You make dozens if not hundreds of decisions every single day and don't even think about it. But those are decisions you are used to making or don't have as much impact on anyone's life. The truth is that the same process you subconsciously use for all the little things is the same you need now. Just take it one step at a time.

The first step in any process is always assessment. Sit down and assess what it is you want to achieve. Sometimes we start to solve a problem without clearly understanding what the problem is. This is a recipe for failure and lots of stress. Ask yourself what is it you want to accomplish and write the answers down on paper. You will find that this simple technique greatly increases your emotional clarity.

Goal setting. Thats the next step. Start writing down the specific things you want out of an assisted living facility. Maybe you want it to be close by and and fit within a certain budget. Maybe you want the room to be blue. Write it all down and when you are done start to prioritize. Figure out which of those goals on the list are really the important ones (probably not the blue room). Figure out the top 3-5 things that you must have and it will give you a focus you didn't have before you started the process.

Now you can make a plan. You know what you are looking for so now how are you going to find it. Maybe you use a free referral service like Caring Senior Placement to help you find some candidate facilities, maybe you go on your own. Whatever you do, have a plan. Figure out the steps and processes you are going to use to find the facility that meets the goals you just set.

So you have everything you need now to make an effective decision. You have made an assessment of the problem, you have set goals and you made and executed a plan to meet those goals. You are well on your way to making a decision you can be happy with. Just remember one thing. Your decision doesn't have to be final. Don't stress yourself out that once to move your senior into that facility, that you can't move them right back out. Consider the move a trial period so you can make sure that they are meeting your goals. See, wasn't that easy? Just break it all down into manageable pieces and its easy to make a good decision.
