Breaking The Myths Surrounding Hypnotherapy Treatment
There are a lot of people who have happily undergone hypnotherapy treatment
. This makes it highly unfortunate that some people continue to believe in some false notions surrounding the procedure. Here are only some of the myths that need to be changed so more people can benefit from this form of therapy.
#1- Therapists control mental and physical reactions.
This therapeutic option notably involves hypnosis. Naturally, because of stage shows and popular television programs, people tend to imagine that hypnotism completely eliminates a person's willpower. Nothing can be further from the truth. The process involves putting a person in an altered state of consciousness. This however, only means getting in touch with the subconscious. The person under therapy remains in control and can choose to do or say what he wants at any time.
#2- Only people with weak minds can be hypnotized.
One criterion for a good hypnosis candidate is susceptibility. This however does not mean that a person has a weak mind or is gullible. This simply means that an individual is more positively responsive to the suggestions of a therapist. Moreover, one needs to maintain good mental control and concentration to reap the benefits of hypnosis therapy. In short, you don't have to be mentally weak. All you need to benefit from the procedure is to maintain a completely willing attitude.
#3- Therapists are mentally gifted individuals.
In stories, people who are capable of hypnotizing other people are often portrayed as super powered entities. The truth though is that ordinary individuals can learn to perform hypnotherapy treatment. Usually, those who can perform it belong to the health care industry and have received special training for the procedure. Hence, medical doctors, psychologists and counselors can use the procedure. They usually use a set of cues and scripts during a session.
#4- Only people with psychological problems can benefit from hypnotism.
Some people still believe that a lot of therapeutic approaches are only useful to people who are psychologically bothered. It is important to take note though that there are experts who even recommend against hypnotherapy if a subject suffers from psychosis. Hypnotherapy is really most effective in changing habits, attitudes and beliefs that are counterproductive or harmful. The treatment option can then be used for people with smoking problems, eating disorders and anxiety issues. Specialists can also use hypnotherapy treatment for people who suffer from insomnia, asthma and other illnesses.
#5- Anyone can be helped by hypnosis therapy.
It is commonly agreed upon that hypnotherapy is safe and natural. It may not be very helpful or useful though if the person undergoing it is not genuinely willing. They may verbally consent to it but still keep prejudices against the procedure. For it to be truly effective, one has to be truly willing and open minded.
There are other misconceptions about this treatment choice. It is clear from these five major myths though that there is really nothing alarming or scary about going through a hypnotherapy session. You might want to consider this option now if you want a good resolution to your problems.
