Breast Augmentation: General Information About The Procedure

Breast augmentation is a common plastic surgery procedure that entails having changes done to the chest of the individual to improve appearance

. The use of implants is the common form of augmentation for both men and women. Although most patients for this type of operation are women, there are cases of men having it done to them as well.

Implants

Implants consist of two basic fillers, namely saline and silicone. The bags filled with either substance are then inserted into incisions that the surgeon makes in or around the chest. Breast augmentations using implants can place the saline or silicone bag under the pectoral muscle or just behind the breast tissue, directly above the pectoral muscle. There are distinct advantages and disadvantages of either placement.

The preference between saline and silicone based implants is dependent on the individual. Saline is considered safer than silicone ones but the feel of saline may be slightly different from natural breasts. The saline is readily absorbed by the body in the case of a leak, which makes it less toxic and less of a health risk to the patient. On the other hand, silicone may feel more natural but it has a higher risk of creating complications in the long run compared to saline based ones.

This means that the silicone filled bags may require the patient to regularly visit a doctor to have a routine check up to see how things are. Recent advancements to the way that the silicone filled implants are made have also reduced the risk of leaking or rupture. This is as long as regular and routine check ups are done on the patient under the supervision of a qualified doctor.

Placement

The quality of a breast augmentation operation can also be dependent on the area where the filled bag is placed. Depending on the natural amount of tissue and fat already present in the patient, the doctor will give the patient options with regard to where the implant can make more improvement.

Placing the implant just under the breast tissue makes it appear more natural but also heightens the risk of complications. Whereas, placing the implant just under the muscle reduces health risks but may not appear as natural.

The patient may be guided by the surgeon regarding which implant to use and where to place the implant. It is best o consider the choices presented and ask the surgeon about his opinion regarding the matter.
