Breast Augmentation - Saline Vs. Silicone Implants
So you've thought about getting a breast augmentation
, but now you need to know what kind of options you have. There are two types of implants that you can choose from: saline and silicone.
Silicone
Made from the earth's second most common compound silicon, this can be found in all kinds of everyday items including lotions, soaps, rocks, and quartz.
Though these may have had a bad reputation in the 90's, the new gel-filled silicone implants are safe to use and approved by the FDA for those 22 years old and up for cosmetic purposes. For those looking for reconstructive surgery, there is no minimum age. The rubber shell is prefilled with a gel, mimicking human fat, giving the final result a natural look and feel. Out of the two options this works best for women with minimal soft tissue coverage.
The option can be used for both a breast augmentation or reconstruction purposes. For those looking for purely reconstructive, or correction of a congenital deformity, this is the option most used.
Saline
When choosing saline, the choice then becomes getting a fixed or adjustable volume. If you choose an adjustable volume, this allows a post-op doctor to change the size of the implant if you are unsatisfied. This can truly come in handy being able to see the change on you and being able to make them larger or smaller so there is no regret. This method is also good for women just seeking a lift, along with enhancement. This is possible because the silicone shell is entered during surgery, then the solution is added. The shell is not pre-filled like a fixed volume.
Like many women, you may ask yourself what happens if the breast ruptures? With these implants, you will know right away when a rupture occurs as the rupture will be visible to the naked eye. Being made from primarily saltwater, the body will absorb the solution safely so there will be no health risks associated with the rupture.
For placement and scar concerns, breathe easy. These can be inserted in four different areas with relatively small incisions. The four areas of insertion are the armpit, belly button, under the breast and outside the areola. Why so many options? As mentioned before, the shell is entered before the saltwater solution is added allowing more flexibility.
