Dallas plastic surgery is a growing, dynamic field and that's especially true in breast augmentation surgery and the implants themselves. The types of implants used in nearly every breast augmentation surgery I did just five years ago, are seldom chosen today. Now, there are several choices available to women who are considering breast implant surgery in Dallas, and it's my goal to work with each individual patient to find the correct implant size for her lifestyle which also achieves the look for which she's striving.
Up until about three years ago, nearly every breast implant surgery I did in Dallas utilized a round, saline implant. Part of reaching that decision was highly influenced by the federal medical restrictions that surrounded the use of silicone implants at that time. There was a set of strict criteria under which we could use the silicone implants, but for the most part plastic surgery could offer most women a very restricted choice of implant options saline, or nothing.
Saline vs. Silicone
Currently, breast implant choices are nearly always made by the patient when it comes to choosing saline or silicone breast implants. The vast majority of the time, plastic surgery patients have the only opinion that matters in that regard. There are occasional cases where a patient adamantly wants a certain incision site and that may restrict the type of implant that can be used. For example, most silicone implants would not easily fit using an areolar incision site. It's possible that a small silicone implant may fit if a woman has a very large areola, but that isn't usually the case.
Currently, about 95% of our Dallas breast implant patients are choosing silicone implants. Silicone implants provide a natural look and feel that is lacking in saline implants. Depending on the post-op look the patient is wanting, we select a moderate profile or moderate profile plus style of implant which, when properly placed can provide natural looking, upper pole fullness that is difficult to replicate with other implant types. Using a silicone implant may restrict the incision site to be used, but only slightly. Also, because silicone implants weigh less than saline implants, there is less chance of stretching scar tissue, as well as minimizing breast "drooping" as the patient ages and gravity affects the implant.
Saline implants do have their fans. Saline implants are very safe, and even should one or both implants leak or completely rupture, while you may be left with a deflated looking chest, any saline leaking into the body is completely safe. Saline implants are also significantly less expensive than the silicone implants currently available. When taken over the life of the implants, that difference is about $2 a week, but when paid up-front, it can make a significant financial difference for some patients.
"Gummy Bear" Implants
For a time just a couple of years ago, we were getting calls from Dallas plastic surgery patients on a daily basis asking about "gummy bear" implants. The calls have slowed since then, but some of the confusion around these "fun" sounding implants still remains.
The newest incarnation of silicone implants are referred to as "cohesive" gel implants. What that means basically is that should the implant somehow develop a hole in the implant skin, the silicone gel still remains within that skin. Each silicone gel molecule binds to the next silicone gel molecule and does not leak outside the implant. The implants come in several different consistencies of "cohesiveness" with the firmest, most cohesive implants being referred to as "gummy bear" implants due to the implants' texture feeling somewhat similar to its candy namesake.
Plastic surgery is at the forefront of implants and surgical changes. Staying on the leading edge can make a huge difference for patients, and that's a daily goal I take seriously to provide the best possible care using the best possible techniques and supplies.
