Breath Patterns and Body Oxygen: Sick vs Healthy People
Breath Patterns and Body Oxygen: Sick vs Healthy People
Breath regulation
Virtually all people suppose that breath control works due to our drive for oxygen. On the contrary, CO2 maintains breath control in ordinary humans. This breath control is done through monitoring CO2 quantity in the brain and arterial blood using certain chemoreceptors. Human drive for O2 is many ten times less. For example, if the O2 content in the atmospheric air is raised three-four times or by 20-80%, our respiratory pattern will stay unaffected. However, if carbon dioxide concentration in the surrounding air is boosted only by 0.1%, our respiration pattern will immediately escalate. As a result, the human body is many ten times more susceptible to carbon dioxide changes.
Other CO2 effects
Moreover, apart from respiration control, carbon dioxide regulates uncountable functions in the human body. Some of the examples are: sleep control, normal immunity, repair of alveoli in lungs, stability of the nerve cells, dilation of bronchi and bronchioles, release of O2 in capillaries (the Bohr effect), blood pressure maintenance, dilation of arteries and arterioles, control of blood sugar, regulation of blood pH, relaxation of muscle cells and tens of other positive functions.
Meanwhile, vast numbers of modern individuals promote the ignorant myth that carbon dioxide is a toxic and waste substance. They also say that deep automatic breathing (or hyperventilation) enhances oxygenation of the body. Hundreds of research studies have found that chronic over-breathing DIMINISHES oxygenation of tissues.
Breathing in the sick
The situation with respiratory regulation is different in ill patients. As it was found out by Soviet top physiologist KP Buteyko, sick people hyperventilate. There are indeed numerous medical papers that have shown this statement. Dr. KP Buteyko also realized that in sick patients, when they get more unwell, the O2 drive becomes stronger in breath control.
The central ground of this pathology in the sick is their low body oxygenation due to over-breathing. It is a law of physiology: the less we breathe (slower and lighter automatic breathing pattern at rest), the more oxygen our bodies acquire.
Breathing rates and body oxygen content
Severely sick people: over 24 breaths per minute - less than 10 s of oxygen in the body (stress-free breath holding time after usual exhalation)
Mildly sick people: 18-24 breaths per minute - 10-20 s of oxygen in the body
Normal or healthy people (they were present 100 years ago, but rare now): 8-12 breaths per min - over 40 s for body oxygenation
Ideal breathing: 3 breaths pe rminute - 3 minutes for the body oxygen test.
Buteyko method
Dr Buteyko also developed the Buteyko breathing reconditioning therapy. The main goal of the Buteyko method is to reduce our breathing actions using respiratory retraining exercises and by dealing with unsuitable lifestyle factors, which include mouth breathing, sleeping on one's back, slouching, not enough exercise, exercise with mouth breathing, etc. He also developed breath techniques to get rid of stuffy nose, stop asthma attacks, prevent insomnia and coughing, etc.
Frolov breathing device
While Dr. Buteyko developed Buteyko breathing exercises (you can find and learn them for free on my website), the most effective breathing exercise is Frolov breathing device therapy.
Both these and other techniques with their advantages, clinical trials, main factors and physiological effects are expalined in detail on the website (follow the links below).
