Bring A Wild Bird Theme To Life In A Breezeway
A breezeway that connects the main house to the garage is a perfect place to showcase
an outdoor theme and blur the demarcation between inside and outside. And what better way to soften that line than with a wild bird theme that makes the transition nearly seamless?
There are a couple of ways to go with a wild bird theme depending on where you live. In the south, tropical birds and palm trees may be the most appropriate way to go, whereas gulls, terns and pelicans may be a great choice for a seaside cottage. In this article we will focus on a native birds typical to northern climes, where species like finches, robins, bluebirds, jays, sparrows and cardinals abound.
Create a backdrop for a Northern Wild Bird Theme
Start by making your walls a seamless backdrop to the great outdoors. If you have the wall space and are artistically inclined, you can paint a freehand mural of trees, leaves and birds on the main walls and around windows and door frames. If you are less artistically inclined, search online or in craft stores for a paint-by-number mural that anyone can do. You can also use a projector to display and trace an image on the wall, then fill in with acrylic craft paint.
Make the floors part of your backdrop as well. If your floors are concrete, you can stencil leaf designs on the floor or attach leaves to the floor with painters tape on back and sponge paint around them. Paint in a flagstone path if you wish or add area rugs that complement your theme and colors.
Add Three-Dimensional Interest
Do not stop with flat paint on the walls. Add interest to corners of the room by collecting bare branches. Fill a deep planter with clean craft sand and push the branches into the sand to create trees then add natural touches with faux birds, nests and seasonal leaves that can be wired onto the branches. Craft stores sell a great selection of bird theme floral arrangement accents that can be used to accentuate your trees.
Add interest to the space above windows by adding a wood shelf that spans across the windows. Bird houses, grapevine wreaths, faux birds, and garden statuary will add a little interest up high.
Accenting in Wild Bird Style
Branches can be used a natural curtain rods to hold tab linen curtains. A key wall hook by the door in a bird theme will help you stay organized and bird-theme wall hooks provide a pretty place to hang coats and scarves.
Twig furniture or a rustic garden bench is in keeping with the theme and provides a convenient place to sit. Top a bird bath with a piece of round cut glass for an impromptu side table and add more bird accents. An old potting table with open shelves above can display weathered garden pots and white iron bird accents above and offer storage below for shoes, pet supplies, laundry supplies or whatever needs to be tucked out of sight.
Add a little interest here and there with wild bird wall art, bird photos surrounded with twig or weathered frames, pitchers of fresh or dried flowers, or grapevine wreaths.
