Male Or Female Dog - Which Is Best?

When you ask people whether a male dog or a female dog makes a better pet half the

people who respond will usually tell you a male dog -- and the other half will tell you a female dog. There really is no correct answer. However, there are definite differences. You can choose which gender will suit you best.

Speaking very generally, male dogs are often very affectionate. In some ways they are less complicated than female dogs. They want something, they go get it. They don't like another dog, they show it. They want to be petted, they come sit next to you.

When it comes to training a male dog, they can be easy or difficult, depending on how motivated they are. If you can figure out how to motivate a male dog they are very easy to train. If, however, your male dog is unmotivated, they may seem hard to train. It's all a matter of finding ways to keep them interested.

Male dogs can have some problems when they are left intact. Sexual interest can cause them to be uninterested in training. It can cause them to be too interested in female dogs in the neighborhood, even if they are in your fenced yard where they are supposed to be. It's not unheard of for a male dog to try to climb out of a fence to go visit a female dog in season. Intact male dogs can also be disposed to marking in your house. Many male dogs become better pets if you have them neutered after they reach physical maturity. There are some health risks if you have a dog neutered when he's too young but if you wait until a dog is a year old then those risks diminish.

Female dogs are often considered to be more intelligent than male dogs. Whether they are or not is debatable, but in a household that contains both male and female dogs, the female dogs usually run things. In the wild, among wolves and feral dogs, there is also an alpha female who demands respect. Males are usually more accommodating while females tend to take charge.

Females may be a little more standoffish than male dogs. Individual female dogs may be very loving and affectionate but, in general, many female dogs are a little more aloof than male dogs. They tend to act more mature than male dogs.

Female dogs often take to training very easily. They can be very focused and intense and often progress faster than the boys. When males and females begin training at the same age, females tend to learn faster in the beginning. Males may catch up and excel later, but females usually get a head start.

As with the males, if females are left intact their sexual interest can be a distraction. However, female dogs only come in season once or twice a year so sexual interest is not the full-time hobby that it is with the males. Nevertheless, when a girl is in season it's hard to get her to focus on other matters. Ideally you should wait until a female dog is a year old to have her spayed for health reasons. Spaying any earlier than that can result in various kinds of cancers in later life.

Both male and female dogs are wonderful pets. It really depends on what kind of personality you prefer. Remember, too, that each individual dog is different. There are very affectionate female dogs and very serious, mature male dogs. You should get to know a dog as much as possible to make a good choice of which gender -- and which dog -- is right for you.
