The British are generally considered to be a tidy lot

, but as in any country, there are exceptions to the generalizations. Over 1000 take-away and burger containers were stacked in the living area and a mountain of cigarette butts were left stacked on top of the bathroom sink. A national cleaning company recently did an informal survey of over 1000 UK residents to find out more about housekeeping habits across the nation. Some of the results were fascinating.

The firm found that a third of the respondents found cleaning to be an odious task done only out of necessity. A full 61% of the populace would rather pay a cleaner to do the dirty work rather than lower themselves to the task and 75% of the home cleaning duties are still done by females (whether they work or not).

On the other hand, 14% of the populace consider cleaning a form of exercise and 7% say that they actually enjoy cleaning the house. 7% only clean house if someone is coming to visit and 10% clean only once a month. In Ireland, 30% report that they clean only once a month. The survey also revealed where the dirtiest homes in the UK can be found. Here are the worst five areas for home cleanliness standards, according to the survey:

1) Northern Ireland

2) Wales

3) South East

4) London

5) Yorkshire and the Humber
