British Academics - How To Build Your Vocabulary
A context clues is a statement used by a writer added to the definition of a word besides its meaning, to provide a denotation of a word for reason that they assume some readers may not understand. You may notice some context clues being used in sentences or paragraphs in which the word occurs.
Be familiar with the types of context clues, spot and use them. Provided below are 6 types of context clues which are:
1. Definition context clue
The writer includes a statement to make the reader understand the meaning of a word. In the following example, "infirmed" is defined as having a disease.
The people in the village were warned to avoid going out until the infirmed was isolated. A notice containing the symptoms of the disease was distributed to inform and alert the public.
2. Synonym context clue
The author adds a synonym to assist the reader to know the meaning of a word. A synonym is a word which may substitute a word for another because it has the same meaning or nearly the same meaning. In the following example, the synonym "gossip" helps the reader understand the meaning of "chatter."
The whole town knew the old woman's sad life story because the men and women in the marketplace were gossiping or chattering about her.
3. Antonym context clue
The author includes an antonym to help the reader understand the meaning of a word. An antonym is a word with an opposite meaning. In the following example, the antonym "release" helps the reader understand the meaning of "withhold."
The protesters were arrested after not giving in during the rally. They were withheld against their will for more than 24 hours in jail. They were then released when authorities did not have any case to charge them with.
4. Description context clue
The author adds one or more descriptions to assist the reader recognize the meaning of a word. Description brings a person or event to life by telling what a person or thing looks like, feels, or does, or shows, how something tastes, smells, or sounds. It builds a mental image for the reader by making present what is absent to understand a word better. In the following example, the word to be describes is THUG using descriptions such as suspicious, criminal, with evil glare.
He was a known hooligan in the area. He seemed suspicious and seemed ready to hurt somebody at any time. His unshaved beard matched his frown and evil glare.
5. Summary context clue
The author includes a number of statements that allow the reader understand what the word means. In the following example, statements like get refresh, make younger, cool down will enable the reader to understand the meaning of "rejuvenate"
My mom was rejuvenated after a week-long vacation at the beach. She needed all the rest she could get to refresh her once again. She was able to cool down and was able to feel younger with that trip.
6. Visual context clue
The author uses a picture, a drawing, a chart, a graph, or other types of visual explain to the reader the meaning of a word. In the following example, the picture and its caption that is close to the sentence helps the reader understand that "entwine" means twist together.
Her grandparents' passion for love was like how a cord was entwined.
