Bruce Trail Day: Celebrating Local Nature

Sunday, Oct

Sunday, Oct. 2, is Bruce Trail Day, an annual event celebrating Canadas oldest and longest footpath. Hosted by the Bruce Trail Conservancy and each of the nine Bruce Trail Clubs, the family-friendly day promotes trail use and education, natural heritage conservation and stewardship, and physical activity and health.

If the long-range weather forecast is accurate, Bruce Trail Day will be a great day for a free, guided hike celebrating our diverse local landscapes and the amazing variety of life along the Niagara Escarpment. Were lucky to have four Bruce Trail clubs in the area The Beaver Valley Club, The Blue Mountains Club, The Sydenham Club and the Peninsula Club.

The Beaver Valley Club will host a 6 km and 10 km at Old Baldy (Kimberly) where youll get the chance to encounter ancient cedar trees and watch turkey vultures soar over the valley. Both hikes start at 1:30 p.m.

Christine Blake, the clubs member recruiter, said their members go all out to welcome the public on Bruce Trail Day.

Well have a canopy and table set up with literature about the trail, and well have home-baked goodies and local apples for the hikers after they finish their walk.

Christine added that the trees have already begun to change colour and she expects them to be at their peak on Bruce Trail Day.

The Sydenham Club will host their event at Inglis Falls in Owen Sound where the Sydenham River plunges 18m over the Niagara Escarpment. Hikers will enjoy a pleasant 5 km loop through the Inglis Falls Conservation Area. Hikes depart at 1:30 p.m.

The Blue Mountains Club will host an interpretive hike at Blue Mountain where you can enjoy the fall colours and magnificent views of The Village at Blue, Collingwood and Georgian Bay. The hike runs from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Peninsula Clubs Bruce Trail Day hikes wrap up several days of events included in their 8th Annual Outdoor Festival. Hikes will take place in the Dyers Bay area that encompasses mixed, hardwood and evergreen forests, pastoral meadow and breathtaking cliff vistas along Georgian Bay. Hikes start at 10 a.m. and will be of different lengths and degrees of difficulty.

The Bruce Trail Conservancy

The Bruce Trail Conservancy is a charitable organization committed to sustaining and maintaining the Bruce Trail. A Board of Directors governs the Conservancy and currently there are about 8,700 club members. The main trail spans 885 km along the Niagara Escarpment from Niagara to Tobermory, with 400 km of side trails. Each segment of the trail offers unique landscapes, and amazing flora and fauna.

About 75 per cent of visitors on the Bruce Trail are not from the area and many dont realize that thousands of volunteers from the nine clubs are responsible for maintaining, stewarding and promoting the trail.

On Bruce Trail Day club members will be on hand to educate hikers about their year-round hiking programs, trail maintenance opportunities and what the members are doing to establish a conservation corridor from Niagara to Tobermory.

Keep in mind hikes are most enjoyable when you come prepared. Where sturdy shoes or hiking boots, dress in layers, and bring water. And dont forget your camera to capture images of the best our local nature has to offer.
