With the recent events in Japan with the earthquake and tsunami you can see how being prepared can help you. But, you can see how you can never predict how bad things can get. You may think you have everything covered but the event could be beyond what was imagined.

It is estimated about 100,000 commuters were stranded in Tokyo, and other cities I also would imagine, because of the earth quake. They had no way out and nowhere to go until some shelters where set up for them. If any of these travelers had been carrying a bug out bag of sorts with them, they would have been able to sustain themselves until they could get home.

Those that live along the coast that managed to get away lost everything they had. If they would have had a bug out bag kept in their car at all times, they would have had something to get them by for a couple days at least. It can pay to prepare for the unknown and the unexpected.

If you have not made any preparations for those events you think will never happen, start working on it now. It does not matter where you live in the world, you should be prepared. Every region of the world has something that can impact your life in some way so think about what those things are and what you can do.

If you get to work by train or bus, carry a small backpack with a couple water bottles, some snack food and flashlight at the least. Put some items in the trunk of your car that you can leave there, you can use a small cardboard box to keep your stuff in, nothing fancy is needed.

Have a bag set up for all of your family members that you can keep at home in a location that allows you to grab them and go quickly. If time is of the essence, you don't want to waste time getting stuff together. You could be on the road before most other people and hopefully avoid traffic jams.
