Buick Dealers In Naples Say Us Ecotec Engine Plant Is Just One More Thing Buick Is Doing Right

In todays economy many Americans are having a hard time finding and keeping their jobs

. Well, for people living in Tonawanda, New York, Defiance, Ohio, and Bay City, Michigan looking for work, they may not be unemployed much longer. General Motors, the owner of the Buick brand has created a small solution for three cities to create jobs for people living there. GM has announced that they will invest more than $494 million to create nearly 550 jobs for the plants in Tonawanda, New York, Defiance, Ohio, and Bay City, Michigan to produce their next generation fuel efficient Ecotec engine. The investment includes facility renovation, new machinery, equipment and special tooling to support this engine program at the three plants.

Cal Rapson, Vice president and director, UAW International Union, says of this new investment, "This investment is important because it supports manufacturing in the United States; All three plants have a strong reputation for building quality and focusing on the needs of our customers."

General Motors project consists of investing $425 million for site capacity for 370, 00 engines per year in Tonawanda, New York. This plant will add about 470 jobs to that community. In Defiance, Ohio, GM will invest $59 million to build precision sand-cast engine blocks at a capacity of 188,000 annually and create about 80 jobs in that community. In Bay City Michigan, GM will invest $10.5 million in the plant to create connecting rods for the Ecotec engine and this plant will create 15 jobs for the community.

Denise Johnson, vice president of labor relations also commented on GM's new investment for the Ecotec engine, "GM is transforming its product portfolio to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, and the next generation Ecotec engine is an integral part of that transformation. The investment in state-of-the-art four-cylinder engines is another example of GM's commitment to replace larger-displacement engines with more compact, advanced four-cylinder engines that optimize fuel savings and performance. We look forward to working with our union partners at these three plants to make this investment a success."

The GM Ecotec engine is similar to the Ford EcoBoost and features direct injection, which is now becoming the mainstream technology in the industry, variable valve timing, and turbo charging. The current Ecotec 2.4L features direct injection and variable valve timing and is built in the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Equinox, and GMC Terrain. The current version of the Ecotec is available in 2.0L, 2.2L, and 2.4L displacements. Locally, Buick Dealers in Naples were excited to hear that the current version of Ecotec engine was recently recognized as a Ward's Auto World magazine's 2010 "Ten Best Engine" for North America. This award is based on several factors, power, fuel efficiency, and new technology

Used Buick Enclave Naples dealers understand that the plants will begin hiring new employees and begin development on the Ecotec engine over the next year. With these new plants, GM's US production is forecast to reach 650,000 vehicles in the first quarter, a dramatic increase from the 371,000 vehicles built a year earlier. Also, worldwide production is forecast to increase to 2 million vehicles in the first quarter from 1.33 million a year earlier.
