Build Your Next Project And The Hardware To Go With It

In order for us to actually build things that would be sturdy and durable enough

, the action of building entails fastening and putting together different parts with simple machines such as screws. With all the kinds of screws that can be found in your local hardware store, you can find lag screws.

Lag screws can also mean lag bolts. These are used for fastening things like those of a wood make and they are available in a variety of materials from zinc plated steel, stainless steel, silicon bronze, to hot dipped galvanized. Depending on the material, the resistance to corrosion and rust also varies. For example, it is advised you use stainless steel lag screws for exteriors and marine applications. Steel that is zinc plated gives moderate protection against rust. For the silicon bronze lag bolts, the bronze gives greater strength and corrosion resistance than brass and so these screws should be used in wood boat building, boat restoration projects and the like. The hot dipped galvanized fasteners are also corrosion resistant but more so than the zinc plated lag bolts. It's most likely that the screws here are thicker due to the galvanized coating and should be used with galvanized nuts too. Bolts made of this material are ideal for use in coastal areas or exteriors.

What differentiates a simple screw from lag screws is that lag screws are wood screws with a square head. They are generally larger than the screw wherein their lengths run up to 15 inches and their diameters range from 0.25 to 0.5 inches. Some lag screws have hexagonal drive heads. The lag bolts as mentioned before are used for fastening wood but these are mostly heavy timbers like beams and posts, timber railway trestles and bridges. Wood can also be fastened to masonry or concrete using lag bolts. They are also usually used with an expanding insert which is called a lag for the concrete or masonry walls. It is manufactured with a hard metal jacket that actually bites into the sides of a drilled hole. The inner metal that a lag has is of a soft alloy like lead or zinc amalgamated with soft iron. It has coarse threads running on its body and when inserted into the timer, it deforms slightly making is more secure for water tight anti corroding strong fastening.

These simple machines are best positioned at right angles to the fractures of a plane. It actually replaces the forceps and there are even lag screws that have looped heads. These are designed for being used as attachment points where something needs to be hung from it. So basically, screws and lag bolts are the same. It's just that the size is relatively larger for the lag screws and that is why many carpenters, industrial workers and the Machinery's Handbook changed the name to lag screws or lag bolts. In any case, they make fastening more secure, sturdy and durable and for this quality, lag screws are very useful pieces simple machines indeed.
