You're probably already eating green, so why not prepare those meals in a place that

is as eco-friendly as the food itself? One trend turning tradition in kitchen showrooms is environmentally inspired design that is both beautiful and utilitarian. Whether you are constructing a new home or just remodeling your kitchen, consider these design tips below.

Opt for a greener, leaner kitchen refrigerator. This shouldn't be a difficult task, since the majority of all appliances are now Energy Star compliant. One of the best kinds of high end kitchen appliances you can search for is a convection oven, which uses a fifth less energy than other models. Another energy saver is a stacked refrigerator that has a freezer on the bottom instead of on one side. And remember when you search for a refrigerator to look for one with plenty of storage options in the way of compartments, shelves, and drawers. These luxury refrigerators will encourage you to keep a full food supply, which is good news for both your family and your energy bill; a fully stocked refrigerator uses less energy than one that is partially empty.

Don't forget about the dishwasher! But shopping for kitchen appliances doesn't end there. You should also look for a dishwasher to help you save energy. Remember to choose the size of your dishwasher according to your family; if you have a large household, bigger is certainly better because it can keep you from having to run the dishwasher more than once a day. However, if there are only one or two people in your home, you would fare better with a smaller model. Also, look for one that is powerful enough to clean dishes without you having to pre-rinse them first, which will save on water. Once you finally have it home, also remember to keep a reasonable amount of space between your home kitchen appliances; placing the dishwasher next to the refrigerator, for instance, can result in the refrigerator using more energy to keep food cool.

Rethink your lighting. Being green in the kitchen isn't all about kitchen appliances, however. You'll need ample light to prepare meals (and perhaps enjoy them there, too), so make sure that you invest in some compact fluorescent bulbs. Using nowhere near as much energy as your incandescent bulbs, these provide a light that is just as bright. When thinking of your decor, don't feel that this will make you restricted because there are a host of shapes and sizes of compact flourescents like the older models.

Build your kitchen with natural elements. As the green wave gets stronger, you'll be more likely to see one distinct characteristic in kitchen showrooms: natural building materials like wood and cork. Counter tops with recycled stone and a backsplash of bamboo is an idea you can steal from the showrooms you visit. These building materials are environmentally friendly because they usually come from stock that would otherwise go to waste, so you can give yourself a pat on the back for lending purpose to wood scraps that would have languished if not for you.
