Building The Perfect Porch
You seem to have a more than adequate house
You seem to have a more than adequate house. Your family is comfortable and happy with the house arrangement more so with the basement conversion you did DIY-style. There was not much to be done in the basement anyway except to install additional electrical outlets and real cool mood lighting. The plasma TV you installed in front of the comfy recliner chair you just bought is the perfect set-up for an afternoon of serious Sunday football game viewing.
Much as you enjoy the "indoors" you still think it is a great idea to extend a portion of your living area into a
porch. Though your house is not designed in the Arts and Crafts style where a porch is an integral part, you still think that some modifications can be done to build a porch for your house. What do you next?
Does your house have an existing entry porch or deck? If it does, then you can consult a qualified builder or contractor to look over your house for suggestions. It is imperative to seek the services of a qualified contractor for there are local zoning codes and laws that you have to comply with in building a porch most especially if you have to build your porch from footing to roofing.
Your porch design is unlimited. Though a porch's function is to basically shelter or cover the main entry of a house, its definition and therefore its usage have evolved. A porch does not even have to cover the front door entry of a house as you can attach a porch at ground or second level, by the front door or rear entry or at the side door opening out to the garden. So, your first consideration is the location of the intended porch.
Your imagination is your only restriction when designing a porch. You can build it on ground level opening out in the pool or patio. You can build it adjacent to your bedroom, ground floor or second floor. If you opt to build it at second level, wouldn't it be great if you have a fireman pole to slide down to the ground below? What about building a porch that echoes old world elegance? You can knock down a wall of the living room, frame it with UVB and UVA proof screens and furnish it with wooden furniture strewn with lots of comfy pillows and exotic accessories. It goes without saying that this type of porch would need a roof and walls of framed screens.
If that is too much grand for you then settle for a simpler design that reflects the lines and style of your house. You can just extend your existing front porch and "wrap" it partially around the house. Put some simple outdoor furniture out on the porch and maybe integrate a barbecue pit for cookouts and outdoor entertaining.
If you live in Minnesota, get a reliable and qualified
Minnesota builder for your porch extension. Building a porch is not really a simple matter of bolting posts to footings and nailing rafters to posts. Ask your friends and neighbors for referrals. Do not settle for the first builder that you meet. Get bids or estimates from more than three builders. You are not about to pave a patio but build a new porch so the more options you have the better.
