Building With Power And Safety

Constructing a building requires a lot of different machines

, equipment and of course power. However having power on a construction site can vary from site to site. Some sites may have nearby power sources while others may be further out in rural areas and need portable power the power things such as tools, lights, amenities and more. Thus many sites have generators on site to access for all construction workers needs. One of the most important things about a construction site is safety. The same goes for the operation of generators. Here some things to make sure all workers and construction employees are properly aware of.

Never use a generator indoors or enclosed spaces. Now on a construction site there is most likely a lot of open space. However as the job approaches completion make that generator use still remains outside or in a very well ventilated area. Generators produce carbon monoxide which is odorless and colorless gas that is very harmful when inhaled. It can cause loss of consciousness and eventually death. So make sure all staff know to make sure the area the generator is in is very well ventilated.

Do not plug into nearby outlets or home wiring. If a generator is plugged into the electrical grid it can cause a back feed of energy into the grid that can kill anyone working on power lines or electrical transformers.

Make sure workers and staff do not plug in too many tools or appliances to the generator. If the generator has more plugged into it than the wattage it was meant to produce it can cause back feeds of electricity that damage to tools and even start fires. Fires on a job site it not the best approach to building structures. Make sure heavy duty extension cords are used to handle big transfers of electricity.

Always make sure the generator is properly grounded. If no grounded properly it can cause damage and electrocution.

Always check to make sure no gas or pilot lights are stored nearby. Gas is highly flammable and will set fire with the smallest spark. Fires near a generator can explosions and extensive damage.

Always make sure the generator is primed and tested before taking out on sites. Getting a generator out to a site and depending on it for power only to find its not functioning is not a great way to start a work day. Check the oil and make sure it has a full tank of gas. Make sure all parts are functioning properly.

Having a site full of workers who are fully knowledgeable in all functions of the tools they use is essential to having a safe and successful build.
