. It is different for each home we live in. Why is the master bedroom the size of a postage stamp I ask myself frequently about our home. Why is the kitchen so tiny when in the days our home was built people had large families. Somethings we have been able to improve. We took out the wall between the living room and kitchen and made a great room which has served us well. We can comfortably sit 20 people in our dining area now where before 6 was a squeeze. We knocked out the wall between the kitchen and garage to add a computer/den and a small bedroom. We only had a one car garage anyway which we used as more of a glorified shed. So we built a nice big shed outback and added the garage to living space. This has been a great addition to our home. But if you call a home builder in Atlanta you can have it anyway you want it. What a great idea.

The first thing to do if you are thinking of calling a home builder is to start a file of features you like and don't like about homes you visit. Maybe you want a bathroom off the kitchen, maybe you want a formal dining room, you could view those as wasted space. Whatever your ultimate vision, start with lists so when you sit down with the architect you don't waste very expensive time trying to decide what you want. There are so many decisions it can become overwhelming at times. As you sit here reading this can you can you visualize the lighting in the kids bathroom? How about the cabinet shape in the your main bath? Even a house you have lived in for a long time, there are many details you just don't notice. Remember that when you are building. Keep continuity for an overall effect, look or feel you are going for, but don't sweat every light switch, you will never notice a lot of that stuff again, as long it looks nice.

Build your castle, enjoy the process as much as possible. Try not to sweat the small stuff. Keep the big picture in mind as you go along.
