Building firm fined after worker suffers 30ft fall from height

A building company has been fined 30,000 after one of its workers fell almost 30 feet whilst working on scaffolding at a construction site.

At Llandudno Magistrates Court, JJB Homes Ltd, based in Cheshire, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and was fined 20,000 with costs of 10,835.

In addition the firm's director, James Burt, was fined 10,000 after pleading guilty to breaching Section 37(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

The court heard how one of the company's builders was working on scaffolding in Gwylanedd when the fall occurred.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that the man replacing a lintel when he fell almost 30 feet, fracturing his pelvis and breaking teeth in the process.

HSE inspector, Debbie John, said the man was "lucky to survive".

"Falls from height remain the single biggest cause of workplace deaths and one of the main causes of major injury and construction companies must not leave safety of their workers as an after-thought, which could lead to tragic consequences," she said.

Firms could also consider appropriate health and safety signage to warn workers about significant drops.

More than 4,000 workers suffered a major injury as a result of a fall from height in 2008/09.

Companies can warn their employees about the risks of falls from height with a variety of warning signs. These could include 'fragile roof signs' and 'danger drop' signs. Warning signs are however not a substute for safe working pratices which should be implemented in all cases.
