Bunions - Protect Your Feet From A Painful Boney Growth

No one can really afford to miss work for extended periods of time

. However, if you do not take proper care of your feet, you may end up missing out. Your podiatrist in San Mateo is dedicated to providing you with the care you need to keep you on your feet. With proper treatment and preventative measures, you may join the ranks of many other patients who are walking the same day that their bunions are treated, returning to work within three to five days. So if you are suffering from the bunion bump, talk to your podiatrist for more information on how you can treat your deformity and further prevent bunions from developing.

What are Bunions?

A bunion is an enlargement of the joint at the base of the big toe - the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint - that forms when the bone or tissue at the big toe joint moves out of place. This forces the toe to bend toward the others, causing an often-painful lump of bone on the foot. The boney presence, however, is actually protruding towards the inside of the foot. With the continued movement of the big toe towards the smaller toes, it is common to find the big toe resting under or over the second toe, which causes a common forefoot condition called overlapping toes. Some of the symptoms of bunions include:

*Inflammation

*Swelling

*Soreness

Bunions are commonly experienced by women and can develop from an abnormality in foot function, or arthritis, but are more commonly caused by wearing improper fitting footwear. Women who suffer from bunions typically wear dress shoes that are too small for their feet because their toes are squeezed together in their shoes that cause the first metatarsal bone to protrude on the side of the foot. It is important for men and women to realize that wearing dress shoes and boots, which are tapered in the toe area, can cause the bunion to worsen to the point where surgery is necessary.

Ladies - Watch Out for Wearing Heels!

Many women love to wear high heels. The problem is, high heels can create uncomfortable feet, especially with the trend of 4-inch high heels. When women wear high heels, it places unneeded stress on the toes and ball of the foot. If you want to wear a pump with a four-inch heel, find one with a taller platform height, which is the measurement of the sole of the shoe between the ground and the ball of the foot. The reduced angle on the foot equals less stress on the feet and toes, providing you relief rather than more pain. If your toes become numb or painful, your heels are probably too high.

Here is a trick to help you find the perfect fit for your shoes: if the shoe is too wide and there isn't a narrow width, try a shoe that is a half size smaller. On the other hand, if the shoe is too narrow and there is no wide width, then try the shoe that is a half size bigger.

Treatment and Prevention

Nonsurgical treatments involve resting your foot by avoiding excessive walking and wearing loose shoes or sandals can often relieve the irritating pain of bunions. Walking shoes may have some advantages over high-heeled styles that tug the big toe outward. Additionally, to reduce tension on the inner part of the joint of a bunion, stretching exercises may sometimes be prescribed.

In the early stages o f bunion formation, soaking feet in warm water can provide temporary relief, but the best way to alleviate your pain is to wear properly fitting shoes. For instance, shoes that are designed with a high, wide toe box are recommended for people suffering from forefoot disorders, such as bunions. Orthotics are also highly recommended if you have a bunion to provide extra comfort, support, and protection.

For more information contact your San Mateo podiatrist. With proper consultation, your podiatrist can properly diagnose and prescribe treatment to relieve your bunion pain.
