Many women are reluctant to lift weights in the gym. We know weight training is the most effective way to lose weight, build strength and boost metabolism, so we want to correct a few misconceptions about weight training.
1. Weight training makes you bulky and masculine.
This is false due to the fact women do not naturally produce testosterone, the hormone responsible for increasing muscle mass (unlike men). Muscle and fat are two different types of tissue. What happens when people go off weight training is they start to lose muscle due to inactivity. This, teamed with eating excess energy that is not burnt off, will cause weight gain.
3. Weight training makes you stiff and not flexible.
If you execute all exercises correctly with a full range of movement flexibility will not decrease. Stretching post-workout will aid muscle recovery and flexibility.
4. Doing abdominal crunches will give you a six-pack
Not exactly. Abdominal exercises will strengthen the muscle that lies under the fat. In order to see the muscle definition fat must be reduced by diet and cardiovascular exercise.
5. Weight training will make you gain weight.
It might- but in a good way. Weight training will increase lean muscle mass. Muscle weighs more than fat, so even though you will decrease fat, your overall weight may increase due to lean muscle mass. Increased lean muscle mass also increases resting metabolic rate which mean you burn energy at a higher level. So you may not see the numbers on the scales drop, but you will see your body shape change.
