Buying Indonesian Teak Furniture

One of the most popular and long lasting trends in outdoor furniture is teak wood

. The weathering effect that it achieves along with its durability is unsurpassed. Considered one of the most ideal materials for outdoor use, much of what is on the American market today comes from Indonesia. Consumers shopping for teak should become familiar with both the grading of the wood and its subsequent pricing.

The manufacturing of teak varies widely in Indonesia. Many companies will co-op merchandise they've collected from independent, small builders and sell brands as one label. This means quality can be very varied just under one label. Often these products are sold as high end brands and it is deceptive. In many cases, the teak gets its coloration through chemical enhancement, and it is unknown how safe for people or the environment it ultimately is.

Other manufacturing in Indonesia is more organized. The teak furniture is built using modern machinery and more conventional types of joinery. These companies generally use a higher caliber of wood, glue, fittings and a warranty or guarantee. The end result is much more professional than the conglomerate company.

When teak furniture gets to the marketplace, it is up to the consumer to have done their research before making purchases. The expense of any type teak is enough that it is a major investment for a homeowner. Being prepared with questions about the pieces is wise, and do expect to get good answers.

The grading of teak is one of the first places to start learning. By asking if teak is Grade A, much can be learned immediately. Almost none of the teak that comes from Indonesia is Grade A. That ranking is almost solely American teak. In looking at Indonesian teak, expect to see a soft yellow coloration to it. A reddish teak comes from the Amazon while American teak has little color to it. Neither Indonesian nor Amazonian teak will achieve the silvery weathering that American teak manages.

It is also wise to check the fittings. It is fairly easy to tell whether they are made of solid brass, stainless steel or a lower caliber brass that has been galvanized. The finish should appear natural with no evidence of stain or oil. Either of these constitutes 'treatment' and should be avoided if a weather effect is wanted.

One of the true beauties of teak is its natural oil. It is these natural properties that make it so lasting and water repellent. The very reason that shipbuilders have used teak is the same reason that it is so desirable for outdoor furniture. It will withstand the elements and age with great grace.

Truly well made teak furniture will come with a guarantee. If a warranty is for four to five years, you know you're making a good purchase. Lower quality furniture will start to fall apart within that time and there's the option of making a claim. Have the store notate on the receipt the length of the warranty and save all the paperwork just in case.

Indonesian teak can be beautiful and lasting as outdoor furniture. While its grade may not be as high quality as American teak, the price lines are attractive and the quality can be good. The consumer who will do a little research and ask the right questions can find Indonesian teak that will last for many, many years.
