When one looks for a set of wheels, it's only down to 2 options - brand new or used. While the smell and blank service history book of a factory fresh car makes it the instant choice for many, others may think otherwise.

Probably the strongest reason to choose a used vehicle is the leaner price to cough up. Imagine if a one could save at least RM10K for a one or two year old unit. Furthermore at such an age, it's unlikely for it to sustain anything more than the usual wear and tear. Some might still be under factory warranty. So, what the new owner gets is a relatively fresh set of wheels with some money to spare for something else like a holiday. Of course, there are other types of used car hunters, for example just as a vehicle from point A to point B, a specially desired discontinued model or a stepping stone to something more exclusive.

Nonetheless, screening a used car requires special attention before buy used car. Although areas visible to the eye may look fine, it is the hidden items that might become a future headache. Having visited a few used car yards lately, minor scratches, dents and paint patch-jobs are expected depending on age with the best time being during broad daylight. Uneven body colours, misaligned or new panels can be tell-tale signs of accident involvements. Bubbles' on the skin indicate rust building up below the paint. Things to check in the cabin and boot are easier to spot. Make sure it does not smell mushy (indicates leak) or look too worn down. Run though each power window (electric seats, climate control etc) and sit at various sitting position for a different view of the cabin. On top of that, areas under the carpet in the cabin or spare tire need to be peeled slightly to check for stains or water leaks. If there is, repairs could be as simple as a new rubber gasket replacement or as complicated as a misaligned chassis.

In the engine department, watch out for abnormal new parts especially those placed in the front consisting of the radiator, fan and condenser. Erratic engine idling with and without the air condition turned on may be caused anything from a mistuned ignition system, worn spark plugs and cables, or faulty distributor. Vital fluids (brake oil, power steering, ATF, radiator fluid and engine lubricant) can sometimes give an idea on the service history. On more aged vehicles, be weary of excessive exhaust emissions. Fumes discharged containing water vapour is usually due to water collected in the exhaust line during car wash or humid surroundings.

Next, take the vehicle for a test drive before buy a car. Try to plan for a route consisting of slopes, bends and a vacant space for emergency stopping to test the vehicles road-going condition. Knocking sounds during full-steering lock indicate loose CV joints while noises over rough surfaces may indicate worn suspension or bushes. Jerky gear changes in an auto might be from a transmission due for servicing while inability to keep the vehicle straight could well be misalignment or worn steering/suspension assembly.
