No trip to Cairo is complete without spending an afternoon at the pyramids or exploring the Cairo Museum. This is where Tutankhamen's gold is buried among the upper level corridors. Admiration of the many sacred places, ancient monuments, and bejeweled mosques can't be helped when entering this amazing city.

Visiting the Khan al-Khalili bazaar for morning coffee is a great way to start the day off. Filled with Arabic culture, Cairo dominates Egypt, creating a magnet for all who enter the Nile Valley.

The Nile majestically meanders through the bustling suburb, past many luxurious hotels and mausoleums. From the medieval streets of Bulaq to Garden City, Cairo is filled with culture. The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities is the place to view 9 of the 27 royal mummies it contains and over 120,000 other items.

This museum is so extensive that it is said to view every exhibit inside of it would take many months. To even be able to hit all the highlights, three to four hours is needed. Auguste Mariette, the French archaeologist, began assembling this collection in 1858.

The gallery of King Tut is one of the top attractions, which displays the pharaoh's gem encrusted funeral mask and over 1,700 treasures found within the tomb. Of course, no Cairo museum would be complete without some mummified animals too.

Parts of the city containing historical buildings which are so gorgeous that they can't be passed up are the Coptic Quarter and Islamic Cairo. These areas are filled with mosques and ancient buildings, with the citadel presiding over the whole area. The Coptic Museum is an amazing collection of Coptic textiles in rooms ornately decorated with painted ceilings, carved wooden screens, and fountains. Art museums, bars, restaurants, and an opera house are popular places to visit on the Nile island of Gezira.

There is a church that was built atop a Roman gate and is known as the "Hanging Church", or el-Muallaqa Church. The only way to gain entry is by ascending the stairway leading to the courtyard. The interior is breathtaking with altar screens of inlaid bone and ivory, plus a carved marble pulpit. Something to keep in mind when taking Cairo city breaks is that most of the museums are closed on Fridays during the times of 11:30am to 1:30pm for prayers, but they will reopen afterwards.
