California Motorcycle Accident Prevention Depends On The Right Training
The high number of motorcycle accident fatalities in California has been a source
of concern to Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyers and motorcycle safety groups. An editorial in the San Bernardino Sun calls for motorcyclists to take the right kind of training to sharpen their motorcycling skills and prevent accidents.
According to the SB Sun, many motorcyclists in Fontana are unlicensed. Dealerships are not required by the law to ask for licenses before selling motorcycles. The result is that a motorcyclist can simply buy a new motorcycle and ride right off the lot. Riding a motorcycle can be a thrill, and can be quite safe if a motorcyclist equips him or herself with the skills necessary. A safety training program allows riders to develop the kind of discipline and skills it takes to navigate these powerful machines through California's congested streets.
These training programs include training courses on a training motorcycle at the American Honda Motor Company in Colton. Riverside residents can choose from safety training programs at Skip Fordyce Harley Davidson. To look for a motorcycle safety program near you, look up the website of the California Motorcyclist Safety Program.
The California's Motorcyclist Safety Program, according to its website, trains 65,000 motorcyclists every year across 120 sites throughout the state. Basic rider courses are available, and include identification of important parts of the motorcycle, mounting and dismounting procedures, engine start and shutdown procedures, turning skills, speed adjustment, control skills, cornering maneuvers, limited space maneuvers, curb negotiation, dealing with obstacles, lane changes and hazard avoidance, all concluding with a skill test. Advanced riders must have a valid motorcycle permit or a license, and must have their own motorcycle for training. The Experienced Rider course consists of a single day program which deals with risk management and self assessment strategies, protective gear, motorcycle inspection and maintenance, mental attitudes towards riding, and the risks of alcohol and drug use on motorcycling, concluding with an optional skill test.
The basic course costs about $250 for riders aged 21 and above, and $150 for riders aged below 21. Completing the basic rider course will allow you to take only the written routine test at the Department of Motor Vehicles for the motorcycle endorsement.
Much of motorcycle safety depends on conditions that may not be within the biker's control. These include inattention of motorists, negligent drivers, impaired drivers, motorists distracted by cell phones, poor highway design, poorly maintained roads and other factors. While you may not be able to control everything that happens to you on a busy highway, you can still take steps to maximize the chances of getting home safe. A motorcycle safety program will allow you to understand the risks on the street, identify these risks and take immediate and emergency steps to prevent these risks from impacting your safety.
Without the right kind of motorcycle training, you are just another person on a pair of wheels jostling for space in a hostile environment, where the odds of surviving an accident are stacked heavily against you. Remember, in any motorcycle accident, it's the motorcyclist who has the highest risk of injuries and death.
