Call center outsourcing – The India Story

The call center India story is about a decade old and it is a tale with numerous

twists and turns which is fitting with respect to the incredible situation that it has brought before us. The very fact that Indians can fit into the jobs that replaces those of the English speaking workforce in their country is fascinating in itself.

Call center service has a bit of history behind it. American manufacturers have always searched the world for everything, ranging from blue jeans to electronic goods like semiconductors. They have scanned the whole world for the cheapest labor that they could find anywhere. This has resulted in American products getting cheaper and at the same, it has to be admitted, the laying off of thousands of jobs.

Some of the companies that are very familiar to the Americans are getting their work done from overseas. This is called outsourcing. This resurgence from the assembly line jobs of old has been welcome in India at least. All that is needed to bring this into effect is a computer or telephone. This call center outsourcing process was initiated in the 90's by Wipro Spectramind, whose chairman is Raman Roy. It was him who came up with the idea of directing the call traffic from America to India. This idea caught up with the rest of the country soon enough leading to the call center India boom.

Despite the cynics from some quarters claiming that it is a sort of cultural subjugation, Raman Roy is of the opinion that it is a reason to feel proud. It gives a statement to the world that Indians can excel in any job they choose to take for themselves. It also leads to money and unless the exchange rate situation changes, it only makes sense to get a job.

The companies who have hired call center outsourcing service from India have seldom had anything to complain. The Indian call center workers have made a name for themselves by training initiatives with innovation. The American employers have found Nirvana in India for getting efficient service at lesser costs. India has a stable democracy, a huge English-speaking workforce, millions of college graduates who are willing to work in a call center and for a fraction of the salary that are charged by the American counterparts. This call center India service has the basis of favorable exchange rate for it to work though.
