Campervanning In Perth Western Australia

Perth is a city set apart, literally- it is isolated from all other major centres

, quite alone on Australias coastline with the Indian Ocean. A motorhome pick-up in Perth is an opportunity to experience a part of Australia that is less inhabited and less touched by humans- the outback and the wildness of the western coast.

The city of Perth lies on a flat coastal plain and is centred around the Swan River. Summers are hot- it is recommended to visit in Spring or Autumn! The beaches just outside of the central city include the famous Cottesloe Beach, and Swanbourne Clothing Optional Beach is great for the naturists among us.

Close by is the port of Perth and city in its own right, Fremantle. Cargo ships and cruise ships arrive and depart here, and many locals and visitors like to while away a bit of time watching the comings and goings of the port over a coffee. There is an interesting Maritime Museum in the city, and also a bustling nightlife- locals often come to Fremantle from Perth for the evenings entertainment.

A campervan trip from Perth can go one of 3 ways- up the coast to the north towards Geraldton and Shark Bay, south along the coast to Busselton and the many nature reserves around Cape Leeuwin, or inland to explore the golden outback of Western Australia.

North, Geraldton is the first major centre, and you will pass through a number of nature reserves along the way. The city is a centre for mining and fishing, and the coasts other port. Historic attractions include the beautiful St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, and the memorial for the World War II Cruiser HMAS Sydney on top of nearby Mount Scott. Shark Bay lies just north of Geraldton, consisting of two shallow inlets. The Bay is an important wildife area, with Dugongs, Indo-Pacific Bottlenose dolphins and 26 threatened Australian mammal species living there. There is a Discovery Centre in the township of Denham which provides information and interactive displays about the features of the area.

South, the coastline is more developed, with several small towns such as Bunbury and Busselton, which has a famous jetty- the longest wooden jetty is the southern hemisphere at nearly 2 kilometres long! Cape Leeuwin is the most south-westerly point of the island/continent that is Australias mainland. There is a lighthouse on the point, and many nature reserves and national parks in the area.

The outback is a place of international repute- full of red sand, nomadic natives, tough farmers and things you wouldnt want to step on. In reality, it has those things and more- friendly small towns, amazing landscapes and a beer in the pub at the end of the day! Head towards Kalgoorlie to experience what is know as Western Australias Golden Outback. Both Kalgoorlie and Merredin, a small town along the way, were founded during the goldrush as stops on the way to the goldfields.
