Can God Really Be My Friend?
One day in my prayer time, God arrested me and spoke to my spirit
, saying, "You're talking too much." I was praying the way I thought I was supposed to pray - with a list of requests and a lot of words - and I thought I was doing everything right. I didn't realize I had unknowingly turned prayer into a legalistic, religious ritual. While it's true that God yearns for a relationship with us, and looks forward to the time we spend with Him, we should be careful not to slip into religion and omit relationship.
Think about it. What if we spoke to our friends the way we speak to God? They probably wouldn't be our friends for long. In fact, if we presented them with a list of requests and talked way too much, they would probably think we were crazy.
Prayer is a dialogue, not a monologue. Just as we strive to know our friends through dialogue on an intimate level, we should strive to get to know God more intimately. We accomplish this by praying to Him in the name of His Son, Jesus, then waiting for Him to speak to our hearts.
God longs to commune and fellowship with us. Although He already knows each of us intimately, He loves when we acknowledge Him in what we do. He wants us to talk to Him about our desires, dreams, troubles, mistakes, etc. That's why prayer is the most powerful thing a person can do. It's a time for conversing with the most High, who created heaven and earth, and He looks forward to it!
To cultivate your relationship with God, learn to speak with Him in the context of His Word. For example, if you had a friend who spoke Portuguese, you would need to learn and speak their dialect in order to effectively communicate with them. It works the same way with God; communicate with Him about what He has already declared in His Word. This is a major component of building a relationship with Him.
The most effective way to understand God is by acquainting yourself with His Word. Read and meditate on His Word daily. Have a dialog with Him about His promises; consider His nature and character. Find out who you are in Him. Then, listen to Him as He begins to speak to your heart concerning His plans for you.
When you begin to develop this type of relationship with God, you will look on Him as a friend. You will yearn to converse with Him as much as He does with you. God is a great Friend, and I pray you enjoy the benefits of a wholesome friendship with Him.
