If you can tell them what result you're looking for, it is very likely they can come up with a solution that will get you exactly the results you're looking for without having to use a second company.

The only time that this might happen is if you're dealing with extremely small courier companies. If for example you were trying to ship goods all over the state, but used couriers which only covered a few cities each, that is the one situation in which it might be practical to use more than one courier company to make a single multi stop shipment.

The reason that it is a situation best avoided is simply because it is such a complicated way of doing business. When you ship this way, you're all but doubling every bit of paperwork and administration that you have to deal with, because you're going to have to do it all twice. This is also going to cause extra work for your accounting people, which in turn will always cost you money. So it's always best to keep it simple whenever possible.
