Can You Learn Medical Transcription With A Mentor?

It wasn't that many years ago that you didn't have to pay $1800 or more to learn

medical transcription through an online training program if you wanted to become a transcriptionist. You would just find a willing mentor and start studying with him or her. Over the course of several months, you would pick up the skills and eventually become a medical transcriptionist.

I learned it that way myself, plus a few texts my mentor recommended. I wouldn't suggest learning medical transcription that way for others, however.

It's not impossible to find a willing mentor even now. Not impossible, but not easy either. Medical transcriptionists are usually paid on production, and their time is extremely valuable to them. Taking on a student is usually a losing proposition for a working transcriptionist.

Then comes finding a job. This isn't easy anymore if you had a mentor teach you. If they have a really good reputation with their employer, they might be able to get you tested and interviewed, but more and more employers want more proof of your education.

Employers know what they're getting if you graduate from a trusted online medical transcription school. They know if the school trained you well. They know what your scores mean. They know if things worked out for them after hiring other graduates of that school.

This makes employers less willing to trust to the training given by a mentor. Someone may be a great transcriptionist, but that doesn't mean they'll be a great teacher. It's also really hard for a mentor to provide you with solid transcription practice. You would have to buy practice tapes online as any real dictation is protected by HIPAA.

By the time you look at the cost of the texts you're going to need to buy even with a mentor and the cost of buying practice tapes, you really should be looking at if it would just be smarter to pay for an online school. This way you'll have the reputation of the school backing you up.

You can't go with just any online school. You have to be certain to pick one that has a good reputation. One with AHDI Approval is a good choice, as they meet some solid criteria already.

Better yet, attending a self paced online program means you aren't subject to your mentor's schedule, which can be a difficult thing to deal with. You study when your schedule lets you, not when someone else has time. That's a big advantage for keeping things running smoothly.
