Canon EOS 7D

The Canon 7d has carved out a new niche in the digital SLD market

. No so much a review as an all new model that tangibly targets the prosumer sports oriented photographer. Whilst at a casual glance this may look like a facelift of the 50D or even perhaps a cheaper version of the mighty 5D Mk II, the 7D actually shakes up all three most significantly!

Now featuring a 19-point autofocus system and sporting an 18 megapixel CMOS APS-C sensor with the latest DiG!C 4 processor, the 7D features an ability to shoot 8 frames per second in a burst of up to 90 seconds!

The autofocus system works a treat and represents a noticeable improvement for Canon and it's EOS range. Working well when simply left to operate in automatic mode, the 7D is also very flexible with significant customization over other models. The 7D provides an option for "zone" mode that intelligently focuses on a specific area of the frame.

Speed is only good these days as long as the image quality is also there and with an 18 megapixel APS-C sensor the file size allows for great quality, large file sizes that can be enlarged easily.

Noise has been well addressed with little evidence of any noise up the ISO 1600. The 7D is expandable to 12,800 ISO.

In what's becoming the norm with dSLRs, Canon offers a well sorted HD video option. Shooting at 30 frames per second provides an excellent quality image, especially when shot through one of Canon's excellent lenses.

As with most photography video is no different to get a pin sharp' image you will need to use a tripod.

It's worth noting that the 7D is not working with a full frame sensor so while this may assist those looking to get close in to the action, the wide angle enthusiasts will have to accept a 1.6x magnification.

Excluding the lack of a full frame sensor, the 7D is an outstanding performer and for the discerning prosumer camera enthusiast will deliver great results.
