The Lexmark X 2670 sits in the same price range, between 30 and 50 pounds. Simplicity is the watchword with this. It's not flashy, but does what it does well offering good speed and reliable performance.

Meanwhile the HP Deskjet F2840 offers excellent speed and efficiency. Combining all in one functionality of a printer, copier and fax within a single unit, this is the kind of device many people who work in a home office have been crying out for.

Last but not least it wouldn't be a Top Gear style road test without bringing in a super car. We have none in this case, but the closest we get is the Xerox Phaser 8560 which aims to bring ultra performance into a more afforable bracket.

So if the Canon Multifunction printers are to maintain their position at the head of the market, there is plenty of work to do. For the consumer, though, the news is good. All this competition is helping to drive down prices making top end capabilities more affordable than ever before.
