There is not much difference between Canopy Fume Hoods and fume hoods. Fume hoods are basically used for industrial applications, or the places where there is an extensive use of hazardous gases or vapours. Initially, fume hoods were made of wood, but now as technology has taken its pace, these are constructed of mild steel and are coated with epoxy. Fume hoods can be classified into two types.

There are mainly two types of fume hoods, recirculating and ducted. Both of these fume more or less work on the same principal. A recirculating fume hood draws the air around the experiment into a built in filter and discharges the pure air that goes back to the lab or the cabinet. A ducted fume hood has the air drawn from it and into a ventilation system, where it is made pure and then is released outside the building.

Fume hoods are generally constructed of semi closed ventilated enclosures to protect the user from harmful and toxic fumes and vapours to eliminate the possibility of accidental fire which may result due to the emission of inflammable gases during the experiment.

While using any equipment or instrument, the user should keep in mind certain guidelines and should undertake necessary precautions. The user must know the toxic properties of the chemicals, as the chemicals that are used for laboratory applications tend to be hazardous, dangerous and can be over explosive as well. Apart from this, if there is no indication that the machine is about to open, the user should not even touch it. It may harm the user. Other than this the user should check and compare the magnehelic reading and compare it with reading that is displayed on the hood inspection sticker. If the reading is different from the one that is displayed on the sticker, then there may be a possibility that the fume hoods are not operating sufficiently. Besides all these it is extremely necessary to wear gloves, safety glasses and moreover keep the entire sash clean and clear. It is also very important to clear the chemical residues from the hood chamber after its use.
