Capping UK Immigration - skilled workers allowed to enter from outside the European Economic

The United Kingdom government is about to announce later a cap on the number of skilled workers allowed to enter from outside the European Economic Area. The Migration Advisory Committee proposed a recommendation of a cap of up to 43,700.

The Migration Advisory Committee proposed cap will not include employees transferred within companies operating within the United Kingdom that are also based outside of the United Kingdom known as intra-company transfers - if their salary is more than 40,000.

The government asserted their pledge to cap immigration levels. Statistical analysis revealed that last year 50,000 visas were issued for tier 1 applications also known as (Highly skilled) and tier 2 (skilled) workers coming from outside the European Economic Area. There were about 22,000 of the total figures who successfully applied as intra-company transfers.

There is further speculation that the United Kingdom government aims to target capping the number of family members who can join immigrants already settled in the United Kingdom as part of achieving new levels of net migration into the United Kingdom.

Some pro capping commentators have argued that the proposals do not go far enough and that other categories of immigration routes to the United Kingdom should be capped also if the government is to achieve its stated aim. Tier 4 has been considered a possible category that may also see its numbers reduced in the coming years.

It has been advanced that, in conducting the balancing exercise, clearly the government would be mindful not to jeopardise the inherent interest which lies in revenue obtained from the listed categories for capping and the general contribution that such categories make to the United Kingdom.
