As residents of the UK, we are lucky in that recent years have seen a sharp drop in the amount of car crime in our country. Manufacturers have worked hard and made great progress in securing our vehicles, resulting in it being very difficult to steal a vehicle these days, unless you have the car keys in your possession. The downside of this is that criminals now have much more of an incentive to steal our car keys, and there has been a slight raise in the amount of carjackings experienced; a crime that has previously been relatively low in the UK.

Organised car jackers are known to operate in London, with drivers in the south east being particularly at risk, as they tend to own more expensive cars. Police believe that eight percent of burglaries in the UK were due to the theft of keys to take cars, and there were eleven thousand car jacking reported in 2009.

Potential car jackers ill often use tricks to lure drivers into stopping their cars, like a light bump so that you stop and exchange Car Insurance details. At which point they will steal your car.

The best advice is that if you are in an accident and you suspect it it dodgy, lock the doors and drive to the nearest police station, making sure that you get the registration plate of the driver. Legally, you have the right to move to a safe place.

When inside the house, don't leave your car keys in plain view of a window, or anywhere obvious.
